| Research comprises the core of the Dubai School of Government’s mission to create knowledge, disseminate best practice and train policy makers in the Arab world. In this regard, the School strives to meet a dual challenge of academic rigor and policy relevance with the research that it conducts, both as an institution and in cooperation with its regional and international partners.
The School’s faculty, researchers and non-resident scholars are the foundation for undertaking research. They have a diverse range of research interests, covering such issues as public administration and governance, gender, economic development, international relations, community development, and operations management.

| Governance and Innovation |
The ever growing impact of innovative application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on governance, business and civil societies in the Arab countries is a strong indication that the region has entered a new era in the way society and government interact. Today, research focusing on the role of information technology, social media and 'open government' in the transformations taking place in the Arab countries is gaining unprecedented importance for public policy makers, the business community and civil society at large. The Governance and Innovation Program (GIP) at DSG aims to conduct regional research and run programmatic activities focusing on policies for government innovation and development through information technologies in the Arab states. |
| Gender and Public Policy |
Despite the large body of research which documents the existence of serious gender inequalities in education, health, economic and political participation in the Arab world, there are few initiatives in the region today which define research-driven agendas for informed policy change. The Gender and Public Policy Research Program aims to contribute to the academic scholarship on gender and public policy in the Arab world while simultaneously incorporating gender perspectives on public policy into the education of future and current leaders taught and trained at the Dubai School of Government. |

As Arab governments strive to keep apace of the challenges and opportunities that globalization presents, there is growing realization of the dire state of and pressing need for public sector reform. Across the Arab world, efforts are being made to decentralize power so that local authorities enjoy more autonomy, that accountability of public officials vis-à-vis their citizens is increased, and transparency permeates the access and exchange of information. By disseminating experiences in public administration, and exposing Arab governments to international practices, the Dubai School of Government is setting a framework for the examination of the variables affecting the success of reform efforts in the Arab world. |
| Youth Inclusion |
Over the last 20 years, Middle Eastern countries have made investments that have expanded education and health, and that have significantly reduced poverty. Now the region faces a new development challenge: how to create economic and social opportunities for young citizens that are commensurate with their education and expectations. This is the challenge of youth inclusion. Over 100 million youth between 15 and 29 years old now represent 30 percent of the region’s population. The opportunities they have to receive quality education, decent employment, affordable housing and the power to shape their communities will largely determine the future of the Middle East. |
